Hammerfight Review - Indie Games Reviews

A coliseum-themed 2D fighting game with pin-point precision mouse controls, Hammerfight would be one of the best indie games in 2009 if it weren't for a few irksome flaws

Not too many games rely entirely on their method of controls to deliver a satisfying experience, but Hammerfight, a unique fighting game by Russian independent developer Konstantin Koshutin, rests its entire weight on its unique control schemeUsing sweeping motions with a mouse or touchpad, the player pilots a flying machine, controlling the momentum to swing gigantic melee weapons to crush opponents.

Does this unique title deliver the precision controls and addictive gameplay it promises? Read this Hammerfight review below to find out.

Hammerfight Storyline and Premise

Several competing factions of humanity wage war against one another over the ownership of unique flying machines of mysterious originsThe storyline has a few twists and turns, but it's a bit difficult to follow - requiring the player to pay a great deal of attention to long strings of dialogue and back story to get the most out of it.

The premise is Hammerfight's strong pointWith clear inspirations from Roman gladiators dueling to the death, players typically find themselves inside small, arena-sized levels surrounded by blood-thirsty warriorsWith precise mouse controls dictating each swing, the player with the best skills will arise in victory.

Innovative Controls in this Indie Fighting Game

Hammerfight analyzes the player's movements with the mouse, turning it into a steering device: a slight sweep up causes the flying machine to fly higher, while a big sweep to the right causes the flying machine to dash to the right, etc.
